Inhabit hard bottoms, on boulders, above the halocline, often forming multilayered mats. Abundant at salinities of less than 5 psu. A suspension feeder, feeds on benthic microalgae/phytoplankton (Ref. 83435).

Members of the class Bivalvia are mostly gonochoric, some are protandric hermaphrodites. Life cycle: Embryos develop into free-swimming trocophore larvae, succeeded by the bivalve veliger, resembling a miniature clam.
