Found in salt marshes, decaying seaweed, sewage beds, effluents, and compost heaps (Ref. 94097). Intertidal, prefers mud and algae covered substrate (Ref. 3477).

Members of the class Clitellata are copulating hermaphrodites. The clitellum, their distinctive feature from polychaetes, serves as a tool in reproduction. It secretes mucus for copulation and forms a cocoon where eggs and albumen are deposited. Life cycle: Zygotes develop in the cocoon and emerge as juveniles which later develop into adults.
