Eastern Pacific and Western Atlantic: Eastern Florida, to southern Gulf of Mexico, Antilles to Brazil, and in the eastern Pacific from Gulf of California, Mexico, to Peru.

Supratidal to intertidal, burrower (Ref. 97531). Inhabits estuaries, over rocks, pier pillars, and common in mangroves (Ref. 105894). One of the few crabs that actually feeds on live mangrove leaves and can access leaves all the way to the top of canopies (Ref. 87266). Found in the upper branches during high tide and often among the prop roots during low tide. Primarily consumes mangrove leaves but can also consume bark and fresh wood pulp. Observed to exhibit opportunistic feeding when leaf quality decreases (Ref. 106102).
