Indo-Pacific: from Southeast Africa and Taiwan to the Malay Archipelago and Polynesia, north to Japan and south to Australia and South Africa. Tropical to subtropical.

Marine, tropical climates (Ref. 8). Inshore (Ref. 121727). Coastline to deep waters down to 50 m (Ref. 114767). Seagrass serves as nursery ground before they move offshore at the age of 5 months (Ref. 121729). Also found in mangroves (Ref. 121728). Opportunistic omnivore (Ref. 121726).
