Massive, with oscular mounds or volcanoes. Color varies from bright to dark green to brown black. May become dark and exude abundant mucus when handled. Blunt ends of primary fibers protruding on the dermis.

Members of the class Demospongiae are hermaphroditic. Life cycle: The zygote develops into parenchymella larva (free-swimming) before settling down on a substrate where it grows into a young sponge.
