Thick tubes, usually with two that are fused or partly fused. Surface with round oscules surrounded by convoluted deep crevices. Color: cinnamon tan, orange, pink-lilac, light brown to grayish brown. Growth: tubular or vase-like. Consistency: tough, spongy, firm, and almost incompressible.

Members of the class Demospongiae are hermaphroditic. Life cycle: The zygote develops into parenchymella larva (free-swimming) before settling down on a substrate where it grows into a young sponge.
