Definition of Term

transformation in fish larvae
(English) The process (synonymous with metamorphosis) at the end of the larval stage, characterized by a marked change in form or structure and involving acquisition of juvenile or adult characters and loss of larval character ; also refers to the stage where this process occurs ; the term "transitional" is used sometimes for larvae that undergo a gradual transformation (e.g. in scombrids). (French) Processus (synonyme de métamorphose) à la fin du stade larvaire, caractérisé par un changement important en forme ou structure et impliquant l'acquisition de caractères juvéniles ou adultes et perte de caractères larvaires ; se rapporte au stade où ce processus se produit ; le terme 'transitionnel' est quelquefois utilisé pour les alevins qui subissent une transformation graduelle (par exemple chez des scombridés).
