Definition of Term

brown algae
(English) Important group of seaweeds, some of which are harvested and dried. Laminaria species are a valuable source of certain carbohydrates such as alginic acid, Laminarin and Manitol. Ascophyllum nodosum is used for seaweed meal. Some brown algae are used for animal feeding stuffs and as human food. (See also: alginic acid)
