Biology     Glossary (e.g. epibenthic)

Total Length: 89 to 114 cm; Wingspan: 217 to 244 cm (Ref. 8812). This species is generally sedentary but some juveniles and non-breeders and juveniles are dispersed and displaced during hurricanes (Ref. 84934). Threats are human disturbance, direct persecution and habitat destruction (Ref. 84934). Mangrove trees in the Caribbean used by frigatebirds for nesting are usually destroyed by hurricanes (Ref. 87784). Dipping; offshore; continental shelf (Ref. 356). Found oversea and on the shore (Ref. 83946). Breeds colonially in mangroves or occasionally on the ground (Ref. 84934). Male frigatebirds are not monogamous. They start to attempt breeding with another female the year after it has stopped feeding the chick after circa 3 months and molts which leaves his previous female still raising its chick. This shows that for this species, females provide longer parental care than males (Ref. 87784).
