Fields of black papillae, usually partly fused. Can be level with the substratum or slightly elevated when relaxed. Excavates upper substratum, filling cavities with a greenish yellow tissue.

Members of the class Demospongiae are hermaphroditic. Life cycle: The zygote develops into parenchymella larva (free-swimming) before settling down on a substrate where it grows into a young sponge.
