Comments: Reported as Erignathus barbatus barbatus in Zemlya Frantsa Iosifa and Novaya Zemlya and as Erignathus barbatus nauticus in Palusotrov Taymyr, Severnaya Zemlya, Novosibirskiye Ostrova, Ostrov Vrangelya, Karaginskiy Zaliv (Ref. 1522). Known as Erignathus barbatus in Pechora Sea (Ref. 118986). Previous occurrence from map (Ref. 1394, p. 275) is confirmed by Ref. 1522.

They usually restrict themselves to sea ice and stay in relatively shallow areas of continuously moving ice, where open leads and polynyas regularly form. Feeds on many species of small invertebrates that live on, and in, the bottom; and fish (Ref. 1394).
