Closely set polyps on encrusting coenenchyme. Body-wall is thin, the greater part is occupied by the mesogloea with strands across the ectoderm. Ectoderm may be obliterated by a mass of sandy encrustation. Mesogloea with cell-islets and lacunae, but encircling sinus is absent. Very short imperfect mesenteries (Ref. 89044).

Members of the class Anthozoa are either gonochoric or hermaphroditic. Mature gametes are shed into the coelenteron and spawned through the mouth. Life cycle: The zygote develops into a planktonic planula larva. Metamorphosis begins with early morphogenesis of tentacles, septa and pharynx before larval settlement on the aboral end.
