A large shorebird that inhabit shallow estuaries and coasts; feeds on tidal flats at low tide. Feeds on invertebrates in algal beds over tidal flats, and occasionally on fish. Diet may include surface-dwelling gastropods, pelecypods, tube-dwelling and talitrid amphipods, mussels, worms and adult insects. Feeds extensively and roosts in salt marshes. Visually searches for prey while walking and by moving algae, rocks, debris or dried mud with its bill. Preyed upon by hawks (Ref. 95082).
