Colonies are encrusting or composed of thin unifacial laminae often arranged in oblique overlapping whorls and sometimes forming tubes. Corallites are immersed or exsert and are surrounded by thecal papillae. Frequently fused into short ridges near margins; may form hoods over the corallites. Coenosteum papillae: thick and fused (Ref. 846).
Found in shallow reef environments (Ref. 846).

Hermaphroditic (Refs. 113708, 113712). Mature gametes are shed into the coelenteron and spawned through the mouth. Life cycle: The zygote develops into a planktonic planula larva. Metamorphosis begins with early morphogenesis of tentacles, septa and pharynx before larval settlement on the aboral end (Ref. 833).
