Definition of Term

lay on back
(English) An elasmobranch reproductive behavior where the female is motionless and rigid with back to the substrate and pectoral fins outstretched; also called 'lying on back' (Ref. 51111). In males, after the 'grasp', the male rolls over on his back, then both sharks remain motionless, side-by-side on the substrate. At this time, according to Ref. 51111, the right clasper, the one closest to the female, is inserted into the female's cloaca.
