Definition of Term

(English) Shore area between high- and low-water marks; shallow areas along the shore and in estuaries that are alternately exposed and covered by the tides. Many juvenile fishes are regularly found in this area. Some amphibious fishes live permanently in this zone, others are occasional visitors. (See also: ebb tide, flood tide, estuary)
