Definition of Term

ecosystem function
(English) An intrinsic ecosystem characteristic related to the set of conditions and processes whereby an ecosystem maintains its integrity (ex: primary productivity, food chain, biogeochemical cycles, etc.). Ecosystem functions include such processes as decomposition, production, nutrient cycling, or fluxes of nutrients and energy. (See also: ecosystem, intrinsic)
