Definition of Term

divergence
(English) Upward movement of deeper waters in open ocean ecosystems attributed to the divergent movement of surface waters, i.e., away from the area where the upwelling water reaches the surface (= oceanic upwelling zone), also: the evolutionary process of branching lineages. (French) Mouvement montant des eaux plus profondes dans les écosystèmes d'haute mer attribué au mouvement divergent des eaux de la surface, c.-à.d., loin de la région où les eaux profondes remontent jusqu'à la surface (= la zone de la remontée des eaux océaniques).
