agar
(English) Colloidal extract from red algae, particularly from Chondrus, Gelidium and Gracilaria species; a solution in hot water sets to a firm jelly which is used as a base for culture media for growing bacteria, and as a gelling agent in food manufacture; also used in the textile and medical industries.
