Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Very common in neritic, moderately eutrophic waters. Non-toxic, cyst-forming, found in both cold and tropic waters where it is known to produce "red tide". Mixotrophic; ingests organic matter or prey such as other dinoflagellates, cryptophytes, diatoms and bacteria (Ref. 115134).
