Not marine in life history or distribution; aquatic; on saline lakes in the interior of North and South America during nonbreeding season. Tongue and palate adapted to filtering sea water out before ingesting its prey. Migration follow inland routes southward through central Canada and the western United States, then westward and southwestward to the Pacific where they join Red Phalaropes (Phalaropus fulicarius) heading south offshore from British Columbia to South America (Ref. 87784). Found on beach and shoreline, bay and nearshore (Ref. 116102). |
