Family:  Pectinidae (scallops)
Max. size:  7.5 cm SHL (male/unsexed); max. reported age: 3 years
Environment:  benthic; marine; depth range 0 - 20 m
Distribution:  Western Atlantic: Argopecten irradians irradians, Argopecten irradians concentricus, Argopecten irradians amplicostatus. Introduced in Canada and China.
Diagnosis:  Shell valves convex, upper valve less convex than more inflated lower valve. Surface sculpture of 19 to 21 strong, squarish ribs. Hinge with wing-like projections of about same size. Colour: lower valve light, usually whitish, upper valve dark brown to dark grey with darker markings.
Biology:  Average life span of 20 to 26 months. Form beds on sandy, eelgrass or other seagrass bottoms (Ref. 344).
