Biology     Glossary (e.g. epibenthic)

Found on exposed rocky shores, in Mytilisepta virgata beds (Ref. 126136). Formation of large aggregations of individuals and retraction of tentacles during low tide to reduce desiccation presumably allows the species to colonize hot, tropical intertidal zones. High quantity of cyprids consumed during daytime high tide, while a high quantity of juvenile bivalves are consumed during nighttime high tide (Ref. 127938).

Life cycle and mating behavior Maturity | Reproduction | Spawning | Eggs | Fecundity | Larvae

Members of the class Anthozoa are either gonochoric or hermaphroditic. Mature gametes are shed into the coelenteron and spawned through the mouth. Life cycle: The zygote develops into a planktonic planula larva. Metamorphosis begins with early morphogenesis of tentacles, septa and pharynx before larval settlement on the aboral end.
