Remark |
: |
Also known as benthic octopods (Ref. 104052). The taxonomy of this group is in a state of flux. A total of more than 350 species names have been coined but
many of these are known only from their original descriptions. More recently, over 150 undescribed species have been recognized, primarily from the tropical Indian and Pacific Oceans. The majority await formal taxonomic description. In support of earlier morphological studies, recent molecular studies indicate that the catch-all genus Octopus contains many distinct groups, and erection (or resurrection) of numerous distinct genera is warranted (Ref. 96968). |
